“If you’re not in the parade, you watch the parade.”….Mike Ditka

imageRight before the parade a solar halo also called a sundog appeared in the sky. We took it as a good omen.

image

Clan Donald from Green Bay, WI. provided the marching music for the occasion. The Drum Sergeant readied the pipers.

IMG_1579-1Piping represents an integral part of Highland clan society so it is only fitting that a parade of Scotties be led by a corps of pipers.

image Commencing with the enchanting sounds of the Highland bagpipes and drums accompanied by a chorus of arooos, Clan Donald leads the parade into the town of Bailey’s Harbor.

Over 140 Scottish Terriers and their staff from seventeen states have gathered this year to promote fellowship among those passionate about the breed, bring a public awareness of health issues affecting Scottish terriers and raise financial support for health related research and rescue.

imageProceeds donated from the rally to  rescue groups, Scottie clubs, humane societies, and cancer research programs have exceeded over $133, 800 to date.

imageJoseph Harvill, publisher and editor of Great Scots magazine and Scottie advocate marched in the parade carrying the flag of Scotland.

For the second year in a row

Last year I jumped the barrier at the time trials, jumped back in and still managed to have the best time. This year I ran a straight course.

IMG_8116Here I am with Mom at the starting line. She’s looking down the 30 yard track, waiting for signal from Dad.

imageDad calls my name and I’m off.

imageMy time for the 30 yard sprint is 3.2 seconds improving last year’s score of 3.8.

imageThis is my certificate. It was presented to me by Michele Bronsky, founder and President of the Door County Scottie Rally.  I also got a Scottie full of dog treats.

Door County

imageWe were already in Colorado for Sissy’s graduation from nursing school so we drove across Nebraska, Iowa, and Wisconsin to arrive at our destination, Fish Creek, a small waterfront village in the heart of the Door County peninsula. Embracing a heritage that began with farmers, lumberjacks, and fisherman, Fish Creek made an ideal base to enjoy all that Door County had to offer.

imageWe selected Java Hut as our headquarters.  It was a small cottage behind the Blue Horse Café which was across the street from Lake Michigan and in the middle of town. The cottage was dog friendly and so were its owners. Mom said that combo was very hard to find.

imageEvery morning the pawrents frequented the café for the hand crafted breakfasts prepared by the owner, Carina and the early morning views of the bay.

Door County Scottie Rally

We went to Door County, Wisconsin for the first time in 2013. It was a 16 hour drive so we drove through Kansas to Des Moines, Iowa the first day and on to Door County the second. We stayed at Applewood Cottage, located on the EE between Egg Harbor and Fish Creek. The Door County Scottie Rally is a two-day event that always occurs the third weekend in May. There are all kinds of activities and workshops to attend as well as auctions,  informative sessions, ultrasound screenings, behavior consultations, micro-chipping.  Mom learned how to make a tug toy and I won the prize for the fastest Scottie. We made great friends there and helped contribute to the health and rescue of Scottish terriers. On the second day, there was a parade and all the Scotties ( usually over 100) were led through the town of Bailey’s Harbor by a corps of bagpipers. The streets were lined with cheering clapping, people; Mom was worried if we could do it but we were naturals and it was our favorite thing. After the rally, we visited the national parks, lighthouses, cherry orchards (they were blooming and magnificent), wineries, small villages and just enjoyed the spectacular scenery of this Lake Michigan peninsula. ~ Indy and Lucy

In May of 2014, we traveled to Colorado Springs, Colorado to see our human Sissy graduate from nursing school.  We rented a neat vintage bungalow in the Old North End which was only blocks from Sissy’s house. It had a view of Pike’s Peak out the dining from window for Mom ( you know she’s all about the view) and a fenced back yard for us as well.  It was fun seeing Sissy and her friends.  We stayed a few days visiting, dining, shopping then we took off across the mid west because we were due in Door County for the Scottie rally. ~ Indy and Lucy

House on the Hill

Another favorite road trip is to Santa Fe, New Mexico.  We actually stay in Tesuque, an area located north of Santa Fe in the soft red-brown foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Our adobe guest house sits on a hill and looks out at the mountain peaks which rise in the Pecos Wilderness within the Santa Fe National Forest.  We watch birds, have fires in the kiva fireplace and sometimes our human sister drives from Colorado Springs to see us. One time when we visited, it snowed over a foot. Our pawrents like to eat at their favorite restaurants, shop, go to museums, spas and take us exploring. Mom, being overly protective of us, worries a lot about the coyotes she hears yipping but we are very careful. ~ Indy and Lucy

Meringue Cottage, cont’d…..

Meringue Cottage sat overlooking the trees and in the distance the lake was visible.  It had a wooden deck right at tree branch level which gave us an ideal vantage point for squirrel watching and the low windows were perfect Scottie height.  We had plenty to entertain us while our pawrents explored the craft fairs and the Victorian town of Eureka Springs. We went on walks every day, took a car ride to the lake, and stopped in at our old park to walk across Billy Goat Gruff Bridge. We saw an old dinosaur park that had life size replicas; it was closed but Mom told us about the time she had brought human sister there when she was little.  Arkansas is a great state to visit. ~ Indy and Lucy

Fall is a perfect time for a road trip.  Since our favorite camping spaces were image filled, Mom decided to rent a cottage ( we do this a lot if we are staying any length of time).  She located one outside of Eureka Springs close to Beaver Lake.  It was called Meringue Cottage and we knew why the minute we opened the door-we were immersed in vanilla.  ~ Indy and Lucy

We Love Glamping

12 Sunday Apr 2015

Our family loves to visit Arkansas, a neighboring state.  Fall is a favorite time to go because of the brilliant color changes of the leaves. Before we were born, our pawrents took first Scottie Sophie camping in a beautiful state park there every year.  We were not a year old when we went for the first time.  Taking walks, having campfires were cool and there was something to bark about every time we looked around. We stayed in a cottage on a nearby lake last year because we couldn’t get a space at the park but more about that later. Anyway, Mom and Dad decided to sell the rv this spring so our glamping days might be over but not our visits to Arkansas. ~Indy and Lucy

We don’t get a lot of snow in Oklahoma but it’s great fun when we do.   When we were in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 2013, we went to bed one night and when we woke up there was a foot of snow on the ground.  It was the first time we had ever seen snow and were sure surprised when Mom let us out. It snowed a couple of times at home that year too.  This year we didn’t have much at all; maybe next year we’ll have a lot.  We love living in a snow globe world. ~ Indy and Lucy
