kilts

image A Scottish kilt has a tartan pattern associated with Scottish clans and families. Many families can be traced back as far as the 16th century. Now tartans can represent not only families but districts, regiments,  corporations, and  universal ones.  Absolutely anyone can wear a universal tartan. I am wearing the Stewart tartan. I hope it still fits this year.  I might have put on a little weight. 🙂

imageBrother, slim as ever, wears the Black Watch pattern adopted by many regiments. His only problem is that he hates anything to touch his tail so he wears it a little short.  Our favorite kilts are these made by our good friend, Colleen Lambretcht, mom of MacDuff and Roosevelt. We will be wearing them in the parade this year. ~ Lucy

Scotties have a wide vocal repertoire.  We bark, growl, and whine depending on what we see or what we want but we also howl.  Howling is our evolutionary gift from our brothers, the wolves.  It’s our way of communicating, our audible text message.  We howl when we hear certain sounds outside to let our location be known.  We howl when we see our parents in the yard and didn’t take us with them.  Calibrated to travel distance, our howls have a variety of pitches which identify who we are. We like to harmonize when we howl; Mom calls it vocal bonding.  If I am starting to howl, Sister runs from another room to join in.  ~ Indy and Lucy

The Eyes Have It

imageMy Mom loves my big brown eyes.  They can look golden or dark depending how the light catches them.  It is my best feature, I confess, and the first thing you will notice about me. There are so many inspirational sayings about eyes but I really liked  this one fact sheet about brown eyes in particular because it described what Scotties are all about.  Here is a list of characteristics associated with brown eyes; see if you don’t agree: 1.) Attractive, 2.) Adorable, 3.) Trustworthy, 4.) Will do anything for the people who are special in their lives, 5.) Kind, 6.) Love to cheer people up, 7.) Great kissers, 8.) Very close to nature, 9.) Independent, and 10.) Mentally tough.  Yep, it’s us! ~ Indy

Things That Dogs Do

imageI was a chewer as a pup. I chewed baseboards, furniture legs, doors, door facings, and the deck.  As you can see, my substance of preference was wood.  My little puppy toys, you ask?  I still have most of them.  It was wood I craved.

imageNow, even though I am over three years old, I still enjoy a good stick. ~ Lucy

Spring

imageWe have a four leaf clover patch in our yard.  No, it’s not bunny bait although we know they hop around in our yard at night because we can smell them.  We have that terrier nose.

imageThe Knockout roses are blooming.

imageThe grass is green and it’s time to play….fetch.  The pine tree provides me with plenty of sticks and serves as a nursery for morning doves.  They make this hooting sound all the time.  They better watch out for that hawk is all I’ll say. ~ Lucy

Top Dogs

imageMom loved Barney Bush. Barney loved golf balls and volleyballs;  it was rumored that he enjoyed watching a game of horseshoes but balls were his favorite.  He was the main star of the White House’s Christmas videos during the Bush administration and featured in many other Barneycam films along with Miss Beazley, his niece, who arrived in 2005.  Both of them battled lymphoma and have since crossed the Bridge. However, they remain part of presidential history in the archives: georgewbush-whitehouse.archives.gov.  Here they are on the White House lawn as Barney explains the rules of ball to the newcomer.  Below are my Brother and me.  He is not explaining anything. ~ Lucy

Double, Double, Toys Are Trouble

imageWe got our monthly delivery from Barkbox this week.  It had the cutest little pair of boxing gloves in it; I immediately loved them and, of course, Brother did too.  We are like this with any toy.  I don’t care if there were ten of them; we always want the toy that the other is playing with.  It’s the Scottie way, Mom says.imageI have fun playing keep away from Brother but it is exhausting as you can see.

imageI hope you have enjoyed the highlights of our first three years.  Our posts will be current now with an occasional flashback.  They will mostly be a overflow from our Facebook page, The Adventures of Indy and Lucy, with additional pictures or a more lengthy commentary.  Mom hopes to include some information pertinent to the Scottie population. Our friend, Ruffles, often posts educational articles which Mom finds invaluable. It would be fun to introduce you to some of our friends too. Please visit often to see what’s happening.. ~ Lucy

Angus Fala in TulsaAngus Fala was one of our earliest friends on FB.  In March of 2014, Angus and his family ( from IL) were visiting hooman sis who was living in Tulsa at that time. At a ‘Meet and Growl’ arranged by Gary Greenlee at Biscuit Acres Dog Park in Tulsa, we met Angus and Ainsley along with a lot of other nice people.

Back (L to R) Susan Truett holding Cagney, Paul Zardus  with Bonnie, Emma Arnett with Jonesy and Gary Greenlee with Jennifer Petty’s Scottie.  Missing serving as photographers: Maria Batson, Tim Goins,  Catman and Trisha Jones.

imageOn our way home from the Scottie rally a couple of months later, we stopped for the night in Peru, IL. to pay homage to Angus Fala. (L to R) David and Indy, Trisha and Lucy, Uncle Bob and Ainsley, Aunt Judy and Angus, Mama.  Photographer: Catman

imageVisiting Door County in May allows us to have two springs, one in Oklahoma and another in Wisconsin. It’s early spring when we arrive for the rally and flowers are just beginning to bloom although it is still quite cool. You’ll notice in all the pictures we have on jackets most of the time.imageWe always take a few days to sight see while we are here. This is Whitefish Dunes State Park. Door County has five state parks, 19 county parks, local parks as well as nature preserves. The whole peninsula abounds with the beauty of nature and breath-taking views.

imageYou might want to take a ride in a fireboat.

imageor you could tour a lighthouse.

imageA walk on the bay?

imageMaybe a lunch on Kangaroo Lake?

imageOf course, the real reason we are in Door County is to attend the rally and raise money to help Scotties through research and rescue. But we might as well have some more fun while we are here.

image

imageAnother bonus is meeting fantastic Scottie people like  Larry and Mary Lauber, Gordon and Gillis,

imageMary Bower and Piper,

IMG_7850and Jake–Christopher and Natalie Johnson.

image The ladies that belong to this float work tirelessly rescuing and re-homing Scottish Terriers.  Hats off to the St. Louis Scottish Terrier Rescue.

David with Allison Rainboth.  We meet new friends every year.

imageSo all you Scots out there, be sure to put the Door County Scottie Rally on your bucket list; come see us and The Dogfather (our Dad) every third weekend in May. ~ Indy and Lucy

Clan Donald leads the Parade of Scots to the town of Bailey’s Harbor located a mile and a half away.IMG_8440Bailey’s Harbor is a small village known for its natural areas, beautiful shorelines, historic lighthouses and welcoming community, all of which turn out to clap and cheer on the Scotties.

imageRides are provided for Scotties and staff unable to make the three mile round trip.

We are with our Dad.  He’s a tall guy in a navy coat and a tan baseball hat.  Indy has on his Blackwatch tartan kilt and I am wearing red Stewart.
