Saint Francis

A retablo, in Mexican folk art, is a devotional painting usually  honoring a patron saint.  Mom saw one of St. Francis and Scotties in an auction last week.  Gathering information, she found it was not only sold in gallery by the artist but also through her favorite pet place in Santa Fe, Teca Tu.  It was destined for our home.

After ordering, the artist, David Ross, contacted Mom and wanted to know about us, our personalities, likes and dislikes…that sort of thing.

He also does other prized animal art.

The retablo has since arrived and it is gorgeous.

Indy and Lucy's Retablo

Mom loved the message on the back too.

Indy and Lucy

It is indeed a treasure.

Indy and Lucy's Retablo

It is approximately 8×10 which is the perfect size for the two of us.

The detail is amazing.

Mom thanks the Texas Scottie Rescue for bringing this to her attention.  Mom says it captures two of her loves: Santa Fe and us.  Mom, geeez..~ Indy and Lucy

A Day’s Drive

Still on a leaf peeping quest, we decided to take the High Road to Taos, cut across the bottom of the Enchanted Circle to Angel Fire and then back to Santa Fe.  It would take most of the day.

image

The aspens were spectular.

image

Upon reaching Angel Fire, we visited the Vietnam Veterans Memorial State Park.  It had its origins in a battle near Con Thein, South Vietnam in which 16 men lost their lives in an ambush.  Among the men, was David Westphall, son of Victor and Jeanne Westphall.  Through their vision this memorial exists today not only to honor their son and others killed that day, May 22, 1968, but all members of America’s armed forces.  Thank you for your service. ~ Indy and Lucy

New Mexico Leaf Peeping

The most significant spectacle of New Mexico’s high country is when the quaking aspens turn a vibrant shade of gold.

image

The quaking aspen’s name refers to the leaves which tremble in the slightest breeze.

One afternoon we decided to drive through the Santa Fe National Forest.  Between Hyde Memorial State Park and the ski basin, we were treated to views of many aspen groves.  Check it out. ~ Indy and Lucy

Tour of New Mexico Scottie Headquarters

This is the same place we usually stay in Tesuque, a little north of Santa Fe in the mountains.  It is called the Guest House on the Hill and we are on the opposite side this time.  It has a great patio area for us.

image

The house has wonderful views from each room.

image

The weather is milder than when we come in November.  The flowers are still blooming: the chamisa bush ( the yellow one you can see out the window), Russian sage, hollyhocks, sunflowers, and the quaking aspens are golden; you can see big patches of yellow on the mountains.  Having a good time; wish you were here. ~ Indy and Lucy

House on the Hill

Another favorite road trip is to Santa Fe, New Mexico.  We actually stay in Tesuque, an area located north of Santa Fe in the soft red-brown foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Our adobe guest house sits on a hill and looks out at the mountain peaks which rise in the Pecos Wilderness within the Santa Fe National Forest.  We watch birds, have fires in the kiva fireplace and sometimes our human sister drives from Colorado Springs to see us. One time when we visited, it snowed over a foot. Our pawrents like to eat at their favorite restaurants, shop, go to museums, spas and take us exploring. Mom, being overly protective of us, worries a lot about the coyotes she hears yipping but we are very careful. ~ Indy and Lucy
