Still on a leaf peeping quest, we decided to take the High Road to Taos, cut across the bottom of the Enchanted Circle to Angel Fire and then back to Santa Fe. It would take most of the day.
The aspens were spectular.
Upon reaching Angel Fire, we visited the Vietnam Veterans Memorial State Park. It had its origins in a battle near Con Thein, South Vietnam in which 16 men lost their lives in an ambush. Among the men, was David Westphall, son of Victor and Jeanne Westphall. Through their vision this memorial exists today not only to honor their son and others killed that day, May 22, 1968, but all members of America’s armed forces. Thank you for your service. ~ Indy and Lucy
A fitting and very moving Memorial, tucked away there in the peace of the Aspens and mountains.

There are plans for a National cemetery on the plain below the monument also.

Very nice memorial–you should write a travel guide–“Travleing with Indy and Lucy–our favorite sights, sounds, and smells”

I don’t see any trees that died from insect damage is that is killing them in the Rockies from Canada to Arizona. It’s the pine bark beetle that’s doing it.

We did see a lot in the Jemez Mountains and fire damage too.

The pine bark beetle certainly has taken so many of our trees throughout ALL of CA, and then the fires burn them in uncontrollable furnaces which go on for weeks!
That memorial certainly is nice. I didn’t know it was there.
Thank you for the lovely pictures!

We did the same path when we went to Great Scots back in 2003? /2004? – We stopped at the Memorial too. It’s a wonderful drive.

The last time we made that drive we still had Sophie with us. 2009. We were cutting over to I25 heading for CO.
