Installment Eight

We were lucky the cherry trees were in bloom this year.  This is the third year we have seen them.  One year it was a cold spring and they were not blooming yet.   It is a glorious sight.

Cherry orchards of Door County

Lautenbach’s  orchard and winery are favorites and the honeycrisp apple wine is delish.

This is Mom’s favorite spot to photograph the cherry trees.  It’s over by Applewood Cottage on the EE.

Trillium

The woodlands are carpeted with this lovely perennial, the trillium. as well as these forget me nots.

We take a picture in front of these tulips every year.

Sometimes we cooperate; sometimes we don’t.  BOL!  Did you notice we have cherries on our collars?  🙂

Our friend, Mary Lauber, organized a boat tour during Rally weekend.  On Sunday, 13 humans and 3 Scotties (we were not among them) motored to Gills Rock at the tip of the peninsula to catch the launch.

Here are Australians Mark and Wendy ready to board.

Installment Six

The Barn Hunt was a star event for the second year, thanks to Pam Straus and Starr Photography.  I love it and Mom let me do it twice.  From then on, I wanted to go play where the rats were.  Totally humane, not to worry, although my intentions could have been otherwise.Scottie Rally Barn Hunt, Indy

Focus is my name; rats are my game.

Indy, Barn Hunt

I was first introduced to the rat in a wire box.  It was transferred to a tube and hidden.  I was then allowed to look for it.  The rat handlers said I was a natural.

Installment Five

Rally pipers

The parade of Scotties through the town of Baileys Harbor is always a rally highlight.  Clan Donald arrived at Scottie Headquarters to signal it was time.  We enjoyed a medley of songs as we assembled.

Mom wanted to honor some Scotties special to her who crossed the Bridge this year so donations were made to St. Louis Scottish Terrier Rescue in their name.  Their tags adorned the parade float and mailed to the owners afterward.  Mom knows they loved the parade if only in spirit.

Door County Scottie Rally

Installment Four….

DCSR

For sixteen years, the Door County Scottie Rally has been ‘educating the public and owners regarding issues which impact the health and welfare of Scottish terriers, providing financial support for Scottish terrier health related research and rescue, and promoting fellowship among those passionate about the breed.’  The rally is held every 3rd weekend in May in Baileys Harbor ,Wisconsin.  At last count, 150 terriers from 15 states and Australia attended the event this year.  Two of them were us.

Indy, Lucy, Dad

The rally opens at three on Friday and setting up is the first order of business.  We like Dad to sit in the enclosure with us.  Initially, the noise and confusion of so many Scotties and their owners coming together is a bit overwhelming.

Memorial Stone Workshop DCSR

Workshops, anyone?  The memory stone workshop taught by Melis Lambrecht was fabulous this year.  Jody Hergert-Andresen from Pawsitive Directions holds  invaluable consultations for both days.

Silent and live  auction items were available for viewing.

The Rainbow Bridge dedication was held Friday night.  It’s a calm place for reflective thought or perhaps to leave a remembrance.

Some of us just need a massage or the rally offers ultrasounds at an affordable price too.  Both of ours were good with no evidence of TCC or anything else.

Concluding the event, were the Speedy Scottie trials and I ( Indy) was foiled again.  Right before my run, a fellow Scottie left me some peemail and I stopped to open it and therefore shot my timing. Maybe it was some diabolical plot. However, Sister surprisingly went down the course this year.  Dad lured her across the finish.

Installment Three

A little ways past the Shallows Resort is Frank E Murphy county park named after one of the early entrepreneurs of the Door County peninsula.

Frank Murphy County Park, Door County, WI

It is a lovely, crescent, sand  beach fringed with trees.  It’s probably a busy place during high season but virtually deserted when we stop by.

Indy and Lucy, Door County

We like to sniff along the beach and wet our toes in the bay.

Lucy

Sister felt a need to tidy up the place.

She is so helpful.

Lucy

You would not believe the size of the chipmunks.

Lucy

We have on our Gentle Leaders here. It helps us to walk on lead better than a leash attached to our collar or harness.  Brother is terrible about pulling.  This eliminates it completely.  Next on our travels was lunch at the Harbor Grille in Baileys Harbor so Mom could have some oysters.  Harbor Grille has outdoor dining and a dog menu. 4 Paws up from us.  Located on the Lake Michigan side rather than the bay side, it is cooler.

Lucy

Indy

There are many piers for viewing the water, boats and birds of Door County.  We have loved sharing another beautiful Door County day with you.  Rally coming up tomorrow. ~ Indy and Lucy #doorcountyparks#baileysharbor#harborgrille#doorcounty

This is our cottage in Fish Creek, WI behind the Blue Horse Café.

Door County

This is our breakfast view from the café.

Fish Creek Beach

We always spend the first day visiting favorite spots, taking pictures, that sort of thing…

Pet Expressions/Door County

Our first stop is Pet Expressions, the ultimate in pet accessories and gifts.  Believe us, Mom would have been here yesterday on the way in except for the two hour mishap.  Verna has the store stocked with the ‘best in Scottie’.  She donates 10% of her Scottie sales to the Door County Scottie Rally as well as individual items to the rally auction.  “Thanks, Verna.”

Indy and Lucy

The shop is pet friendly but we like to bench sit in the shade with Dad because it usually takes awhile.

Indy and Lucy, Egg Harbor, WI

We checked out Egg Harbor next.

Door County or Bust

Installment One…..

Indy and Lucy

Storms were widespread across the Midwest on the day we were scheduled to leave.  At the last minute, we decided to reroute through Kansas in the hopes of getting behind them.  That was not to be.  A steady rain began an hour out and continued for the next 8 hours. Road construction was not our friend and our on ramp in Tulsa was blocked leaving us to search for another way…in the rain.  Iowa proved to be a non GPS friendly state and after some meandering we arrived in Des Moines.

Indy and Lucy

We crashed at the Drury;  Mom had a salad and watched DWTS in a group text with friends and we retired for the night.  The next morning we got an early start at 7am;  the skies were sunny, and we were ready to ride.  Somewhere around Cedar Rapids we lost our way again.  After a tour of Iowa farmlands, we arrived at 11 in Davenport, Iowa just 100 miles from where we started….2 hour loss.  We do have to give kudos to Iowa though for its great roadside parks and the friends we have made who live there.  No other problems were encountered as we crossed Wisconsin and into Door County albeit later then we had planned.

Indy

We stay at the Java Hut which is a blue cottage behind the Blue Horse Cafe on main street in Fish Creek.  It was good to be back.  Mom and Dad went for burgers at the Bayside Tavern ( a new added favorite for the year) which was just up the street.  Sister and I kept watch for chipmunks. ~ Indy and Lucy  #roadencountersofathirdkind #discoveriowa #bluehorsecafe #baysidetavern #doorcounty #visitfishcreek
