We left our message as did other guests of the Linger Longer before we went on our way.  See ours?

Budda at lake house

Check out was 10 so we had quite a bit of time before our check in at 3 in Fish Creek.  Notice the fog this morning on our drive to the other side of the peninsula.

Door County

Mom and Dad wanted to stop at the White Gull Inn for breakfast.

White Gull Inn

Everyone’s favorite seems to be the stuffed cherry French toast but Dad always orders the “Nice Guy Hash” because he is and Mom orders different things as long as they come with hash browns which are the size of a small iron skillet.  They are not known to be calorie conscious on vacation.  BOL.

Door County

The fall decorations around Fish Creek are lovely and the leaf color change continues.  Mom says the camera does not show how beautiful it is to the eye.

Door County fall

We saw the goats on the roof again at Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant in Sister Bay.

Goats

Then we ended up here.  You know what this means.  Yep, bath appointment at Pet Pleasures for tomorrow.

Pet Pleasures

Before we left home Dad designed a stencil in order to put our names on the warehouse/art gallery on Anderson dock in Ephraim.  We brought it along with our little paint pots from Home Depot and were soon in business.

Anderson Dock

Here is a picture of the dock taken last spring.

I saw a golden doddle and gave him the barking of his life.  His parents did not have him on a leash.  Tsk. Tsk.

Mom went to the Tannenbaum store.  She can’t resist a Christmas shop.

Tannenbaum

She didn’t buy anything there but sprung for a duck head walking stick at the Rusty Rabbit.  We would show it to you but it’s wrapped for traveling.  Totally awesome, though.  That was our day; hope you enjoyed it. ~ Indy and Lucy

Indy and Lucy

We started out at our lake house and continued up Whitefish Bay Road.

Whitefish Bay Road

The fall report is that the color change is at 50%.  Everyday we see a difference.

Whitefish Bay Road

We went by our favorite park today: Frank Murphy County Park.

Lots of geese and other ducks were on the water.  We even saw a bald eagle.

It was gorgeous today with mild temps and not so windy to mess up my hair do.

Indy and Lucy

This park is never crowded and is a great place for Scotties to walk the beach.

The trees along the county road are experiencing change too.

Road by the Shallows

We stopped at an apple orchard today also.

We continued to Ellison Bay and the ferry road.

Tomorrow we have to move from the lake house to the Java Hut, our blue cottage in Fish Creek.  Big storms are predicted too.  It’s all in an adventure. ~ Indy and Lucy

Another Door Day

The day began with a beautiful sunrise.

Whitefish Bay Sunrise

I love wave watching; it is my favorite thing.  Sister pays no notice of them.

Indy

Later we went into Sturgeon Bay, a town  at the entrance to the Door County peninsula and by far the largest one.  It is a lovely place filled with historic homes, beautiful neighborhoods, and remarkable architecture.  The shops were all decked out for Halloween.

Lucy

We also stopped by the fireboat.

Lucy

This is the bridge that goes over the shipping canal linking the peninsula with the rest of Wisconsin.

By the time we were finished shopping, the day had turned gray.

Week In Review

15 Saturday Oct 2016

So much has happened in a week: Buddy Holly revisited, old friends, new friends, old sights, new sights; it has been a grand one.  Yesterday we drove up the eastern side of the island to check out some areas we have never seen but first we stopped at Pet Expressions to say HI to Verna.

Pet Expressions

We took a scenic drive to Rowley’s Bay.  Rowley’s was once a prosperous logging area with a sawmill, post office and small hotel.  A resort is still there.  The area offers unspoiled wilderness for nature lovers.  The first French missionary came ashore here in 1686 and here we are 330 years later.

We stopped at Door County Bakery, a favorite in Sister Bay.  It is the home of the Corsica loaf, a one of a kind bread found only there.  Delish!

I waited outside with Brother.

Last night we had a full moon.

Keeping It Simple

Door County

Map of Door peninsula:  the top arrow is Fish Creek where we stay each spring for the Scottie rally, 2nd arrow is location of the rally and the third is where we are right now.  You can see how easy it is to go up and down and across exploring.

img_8298

We checked out a state park we have never visited: Potawatomi.  On the map, it is the green area on the right hand side across the shipping canal. It was very pretty but small compared to Peninsula State Park in Fish Creek.

img_8297

There were many hiking trails and

scenic overlooks.

Color change is just beginning.

The other day we had rain all day.

Mom and Dad cannot pass up a Farmers Market no matter where they are.  Today was no different in Jacksonport, Wisconsin as they pulled to the curb the minute it was spotted.

We stopped at one of our favorite spots in Bailey’s Harbor too.  As you can see it was pretty windy out on the jetty.  The leaves are starting to turn and there are spots of brilliance; we are saving that for later.  For now, Keep It Simple ~ Indy and Lucy

Linger Longer

Leaving our friends at the cranberry farm, we traveled to Oshkosh, Wisconsin to meet a friend of Mom’s who once lived in our hometown of Henryetta, OK.  Mom had not seen Sue in over 30 years.  They spent most of their time laughing.

Sue, Lila and Lucy

The next morning we stopped by to see Colleen Lambrecht and her Scotties, MacDuff and Roosevelt.  We got some good exercise playing in her yard.  Then we continued on the Door County to our rental on Whitefish Bay, the Linger Longer.

Whitefish Bay

This is our first view of Lake Michigan from the cottage.

Linger Longer

The cottage was a cute A frame right on the shore of the lake.  VRBO (Vacation Rental By Owner) once again does not disappoint.

Linger Longer

Of course, its best feature was the wall of windows for water watching.

Linger Longer

This is my (Indy) favorite place.  I love laying on top of the sofa looking out all the windows.

Linger Longer

These chairs are handy for bird watching.  We have seen gulls and teals.

Linger Longer

The kitchen/ dining area is nice too.

Linger Longer

There are three bedrooms.

Linger Longer

There is plenty of room out side for us to walk too.

Linger Longer

We are going to enjoy staying here.  Join us this week for our Door County Fall Adventure. ~ Indy and Lucy

The weather was quite cool in Wisconsin this morning.

Indy and Lucy

It was a glorious fall day though, perfect for a visit to a cranberry farm.

Wisconsin

Our friend Debbie invited us for a personal tour of her cranberry bogs since she knew we would be traveling her way.  It was a wonderful time.  We made all kinds of new friends.

The Day the Music Died

After a good rest, we were on the road again.

Indy and Lucy

Indy and Lucy

As we were driving north Dad, noticed the name of a town and zipped off the exit.  Mom found directions to where we needed to go and we ended up here:

Clear Lake, Iowa

a cornfield in Clear Lake, Iowa.  In the early morning hours of February 3, 1959, three young recording artists, Buddy Holly,  JP Richardson,”The Big Bopper”, and Ritchie Valens, ended their rock n roll careers in this cornfield when the plane in which they were flying crashed. They were on a Winter Dance Party Tour performing across the Midwest. Plagued by cold tour buses and flu, Holly decided to charter a plane to reach their next venue.  After playing the Surf Ballroom and despite deteriorating wintry conditions, the three of them along with their pilot, Roger Peterson, took off only to crash a short time later.

Crash Site

We had to walk a quarter of a mile through a cornfield to pay our respect.

Buddy Holly's Pilot

Buddy Holly, age 22, was a central figure in the mid 50s rise of the genre of music known as Rock n Roll.  He wrote, recorded and produced his own material and was a major influence on later popular artists: the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and Elton John.

Buddy Holly

” Everyday, it’s a getting closer/Goin faster than a roller coaster/Love like yours will surely come my way.’  Simple lyrics, simpler times.
