Power of the Scarf

IMG_1376-2Mom’s first Scottie always wore a bandana as her signature trademark so naturally  Mom wanted us to wear one too.  Unfortunately, neither Sister nor I liked anything around our necks so when she put them on us we fell into a transfixed state. Mom, although disappointed, decided to work this to her advantage.  As a way of corralling unruly pups, she would ask: “OK.  Who wants the scarf?”  All activity ceased immediately.  The scarf had the ability to stop all kinds of undesirable behavior…it was magic. Here I am demonstrating the power of the scarf. ~ Indy

For our first birthdays, Mom got us a whole cake but then she ended up eating it all herself so she said that was out. Since then we have celebrated with a scoop of vanilla ice cream from Braum’s and a toy or two. We are still just pups; we both have had our third birthday. ~ Indy

When I was a small pup, I slept in a crate at night. Mom or Dad would tell me to : “Go to your crate” and I would run to the bedroom and hop in my crate and wait for the treat filled kong that was to follow. When Sister came, she learned the routine pretty fast. However, it did not last long.  When Sister was seven months old (I was nine) she decided she was ready for the big bed and it has been that way ever since. ~ Indy

Lucy Gets Collared

One thing that Sister hated was to have anything around her neck… as evidenced by this induced dismal state brought on by her pink polka-dotted Minnie Mouse collar. For some reason, a collar seemed to immobilize her. However, we had to go to Texas and she would have to walk on a leash. When we got to the hotel, Dad said: “Sister, you have to wear this to go outside.” She put it on and the ‘rest is history.’ Go figure. ~ Indy

When Sister was about three months old her ears started to lift and Mom said it was her ‘Flying Nun’ stage. They hovered there for a while and then one came up and eventually the other. The ear lifts were an exciting time for Mom and Dad.  I thought, for pet’s sake, they are just ears; I’d had mine since day one practically. ~ Indy

Lucy thinks she is hiding

Sister passed her days playing with shoelaces, lounging on the porch, hiding and snooping.  Her ears finally popped up and she began to grow. I continued to do my own thing. ~ Indy

Sister loved to play fetch.  Occasionally, I gave her a little competition but always dropped it for her to return.  As a friend of mine used to say: “My Mama didn’t raise no fool.”  ~ Indy

Lucy 2 months oldSister loved toys; she thought they all belonged to her and she guarded them carefully. She was very careful with them and still has toys from her baby days.  She chewed wood though.  She chewed all the baseboards in Mom’s office and bathroom; she shredded the legs of the oak office chair as well as the boards on the front porch. I guess, between the two of us, our puppyhood pretty well demolished all the furniture. ~ Indy

Mom did not dress us too much except for our kilts, coats and monogrammed collars which helped to tell us apart. Sister never seemed to mind but I would sink into an immobile depressive state at once.  Mom said it was pitiful and would make people think I was mistreated. Who can resist a little Scottie girl in polka dots though? ~ Indy

LucyAs April neared, her ears had slightly raised but I still had 7 pounds on her. There was also a big difference in the shape of our bodies. I was long-legged and lean while Lucy was the opposite. Due to her short legs, she hadn’t learned to maneuver the front steps yet nor could she jump up on things. The bed was my sanctuary. ~ Indy
