When Squirrels Fly

A lone bunny was out this morning.  When he turned to the side, he looked just like that chocolate bunny you see at Easter.  The temperature was already 72 and the mosquitoes were buzzing; it’s going to be hot today.  However, something of more interest caught my eye.

Well, hello, Mr. Flying Squirrel.   Just back from his nocturnal adventures, I guess he was turning in for the day.  I hope he stays around because he sure is cute…for squirrel. ~ Lucy

Dancing Rabbits

09 Tuesday Jun 2015

Yesterday morning I noticed two bunnies facing each other in our yard.  One would inch a little closer and the other would jump straight up in the air.  The next time the rabbit ran right at the other bunny and it jumped again allowing the other to go under it.  I was so busy watching this unusual behavior that I forgot to bark.

image

I asked Mom to find out what was happening.

image

“Run and play, little rabbit,” said the Fairy to the Velveteen Rabbit and play they did.  I was a witness to what is known in the rabbit world as ‘binking’.  It is one of the most notable ways that rabbits communicate jubilation.  Who knew, right?   The buns are simply trying to express how happy they are and perhaps a bit mischievous.  Now it could be a ‘spring dance’ too; we will have to wait and see but I think they were just binking in the early summer morning.

They are probably doing this while we sleep. ~ Lucy

We are home for awhile.  Our next tour won’t be till September when we will be heading for Texas again.  It has been a month full of fun though, hasn’t it.  Since we got home from Plano, Mom and Dad have been busy in the yard mowing, cleaning out the flower beds, trimming, and that sort of thing.  It is hot too….90s.  Even after the weeks of rain the old clay soil is cracked.  Mom says it’s a wonder anything grows around here.  We got haircuts yesterday as you can see; we’ll probably have to go shorter before the summer is over.  Our cousin Randy came for a visit yesterday.  That’s always fun.  Have a good week.  See you soon. ~ Indy and Lucy

We got to Diane and DD’s and the pups immediately started exploring. The rest of us began sampling the wares Diane had prepared: champagne cocktails, hot artichoke spread, assorted Irish and British cheeses/crackers and this wonderful Texas Peach Jalapeno Jam over cream cheese which was absolutely delish.

Diane and DD are the consummate hosts.

Diane created a tablescape that was exquisite.

Fresh hydrangeas flanked by beribboned Scotties graced the center of the table. Scottie placecards marked the seating arrangements.  A lovely dinner of lasagna, salad, hot bread and wine was followed by a light sorbet accompanied by  Scottish shortbreads, coffee and liqueurs.

After dinner, there was a barkday celebration for Duff with as much detail given to it.

DD’s SuperBowl rings were very cool.

Diane gave us lovely gift bags filled with Texas gourmet specialties and Scottie accessories.  Only Mark and Wendy’s early flight reluctantly ended the evening. I cannot tell you how much fun was had by all. ~ Indy and Lucy’s Mom

Road trip

We loaded up in the car and headed to Texas to meet our Australian FB friends, Mark and Wendy, pawrents of Penny and the Count.

image

Of course, the real Penny and the Count were unable to attend because of quarantine laws so the fauxs came in their place.

image

We played great games with the pigs and ‘Uncle Mark’.

image

Wendy fixed us some cheese. Later all the pawrents went to dinner and we stayed at the hotel.  They had a lot of fun at one of Mom’s favorite Texas restaurants called Pappadeaux.  It’s a Cajun/seafood place.  Dad loves Cajun food; Mom prefers the seafood and Mark and Wendy like to try new places so it was an ideal evening.

image

Mark, Wendy and the fauxs brought us a gift package from Australia too.  It had a book about Australia, a Cadbury chocolate bar (Mom already ate it), a little Koala bear that has “I Love Australia” on it, a fridge magnet shaped like the continent, a cold drink holder and a Hamish McBeth Scottie.  How neat is that!  It was great learning things about another country.

dog toy

image

Mom has wanted to do some damage control on our toy situation for a few weeks.  I don’t know if I have mentioned it but she is a toy recycler.  Every so often she switches out our toys with other toys she has previously put away.  Thus we have an endless supply of ‘new’ toys.  However in must be done in secret or at least away from Sister’s prying eyes or nose.  I know it is difficult to believe that some Scotties don’t tear up their toys but that is Sister.  She still has her first toy.  On the other paw, I am fairly ambivalent towards toys until Sister flaunts one.  By this I mean, she runs up and down the room with the toy of the moment in her mouth while making a growling sound.  Finally on Friday, Mom seized the opportunity.

image

While Dad took Sister to have her annuals, Mom sorted through the toy baskets placed strategically in different rooms.  To throw Sister off the track, she took pig that had been in ‘time out’ on top of the tv and placed it in a key position.  I, of course, was sworn to an oath of silence.

image

Sister noticed the pig immediately and poked it with her nose to make it squeak.  She would guard it; poke it, but really didn’t start to play with it till Saturday morning.  That is when I knew I had to have it and made my move.  She immediately started her shrill  “He’s got my toy.” barking. I ran to the bedroom and put my head in a corner and refused to budge.  No ‘drop it’ command for me.  Mother just walked away and closed the door.  I could hear her telling Dad the minute he got home but by then it was too late….good bye piggy.  Don’t worry Sister’s got another but I heard Mom tell Dad that I was out of chances with rubber toys.  😦 ~ Indy
