Another Door Day

16 Sunday Oct 2016

The day began with a beautiful sunrise.

Whitefish Bay Sunrise

I love wave watching; it is my favorite thing.  Sister pays no notice of them.

Later we went into Sturgeon Bay, a town  at the entrance to the Door County peninsula and by far the largest one.  It is a lovely place filled with historic homes, beautiful neighborhoods, and remarkable architecture.  The shops were all decked out for Halloween.

Lucy

We also stopped by the fireboat.

This is the bridge that goes over the shipping canal linking the peninsula with the rest of Wisconsin.

By the time we were finished shopping, the day had turned gray.

Keeping It Simple

Door County

Map of Door peninsula:  the top arrow is Fish Creek where we stay each spring for the Scottie rally, 2nd arrow is location of the rally and the third is where we are right now.  You can see how easy it is to go up and down and across exploring.

We checked out a state park we have never visited: Potawatomi.  On the map, it is the green area on the right hand side across the shipping canal. It was very pretty but small compared to Peninsula State Park in Fish Creek.

There were many hiking trails and

scenic overlooks.

The other day we had rain all day.

Mom read and we wave watched.

The fire was cozy too.

The next day it looked like this.

Mother Nature is amazing, huh?  Don’t know what we are doing today but for sure, we are ‘keeping it simple.’ ~ Indy and Lucy

Mom and Dad cannot pass up a Farmers Market no matter where they are.  Today was no different in Jacksonport, Wisconsin as they pulled to the curb the minute it was spotted.

We stopped at one of our favorite spots in Bailey’s Harbor too.  As you can see it was pretty windy out on the jetty.  The leaves are starting to turn and there are spots of brilliance; we are saving that for later.  For now, Keep It Simple ~ Indy and Lucy

Installment One…..

Indy and Lucy

Storms were widespread across the Midwest on the day we were scheduled to leave.  At the last minute, we decided to reroute through Kansas in the hopes of getting behind them.  That was not to be.  A steady rain began an hour out and continued for the next 8 hours. Road construction was not our friend and our on ramp in Tulsa was blocked leaving us to search for another way…in the rain.  Iowa proved to be a non GPS friendly state and after some meandering we arrived in Des Moines.

Indy and Lucy

We crashed at the Drury;  Mom had a salad and watched DWTS in a group text with friends and we retired for the night.  The next morning we got an early start at 7am;  the skies were sunny, and we were ready to ride.  Somewhere around Cedar Rapids we lost our way again.  After a tour of Iowa farmlands, we arrived at 11 in Davenport, Iowa just 100 miles from where we started….2 hour loss.  We do have to give kudos to Iowa though for its great roadside parks and the friends we have made who live there.  No other problems were encountered as we crossed Wisconsin and into Door County albeit later then we had planned.

Indy

We stay at the Java Hut which is a blue cottage behind the Blue Horse Cafe on main street in Fish Creek.  It was good to be back.  Mom and Dad went for burgers at the Bayside Tavern ( a new added favorite for the year) which was just up the street.  Sister and I kept watch for chipmunks. ~ Indy and Lucy  #roadencountersofathirdkind #discoveriowa #bluehorsecafe #baysidetavern #doorcounty #visitfishcreek

Remember When I went to Door County for the first time……Lucy

I was just a wee pup, barely 1 year old.  It’s a magical place.  Can’t wait to go again….55 more days. ~ Lucy

Door County

imageWe were already in Colorado for Sissy’s graduation from nursing school so we drove across Nebraska, Iowa, and Wisconsin to arrive at our destination, Fish Creek, a small waterfront village in the heart of the Door County peninsula. Embracing a heritage that began with farmers, lumberjacks, and fisherman, Fish Creek made an ideal base to enjoy all that Door County had to offer.

imageWe selected Java Hut as our headquarters.  It was a small cottage behind the Blue Horse Café which was across the street from Lake Michigan and in the middle of town. The cottage was dog friendly and so were its owners. Mom said that combo was very hard to find.

imageEvery morning the pawrents frequented the café for the hand crafted breakfasts prepared by the owner, Carina and the early morning views of the bay.
