The presence of a pet in the White House is a time honored tradition. Several Scotties have had this privilege. In honor of President’s Day (we know our staff is running late), we would like to acknowledge these fans of this loyal breed.
First came Fala, the beloved constant companion of 32nd President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Fala had a bone every morning brought up with the President’s breakfast tray. According to WH staff, Fala was an awful beggar and his food had to be restricted. At night, he slept in a special chair at the foot of the President’s bed. He even had a secretary to answer his mail.
There is rather a controversy concerning Eisenhower’s Scotties. He actually had several Scotties during WWII. Eisenhower is quoted as saying: ” I like the independent attitude of a strutting Scottie.” None though were to live at the White House. However, Skunky the Scottie, a pet of Eisenhower’s grandchildren was an often visitor. Heidi the Weimaraner as well as a parakeet were residents during Ike’s terms of office.
Barney and Miss Beazley were the much loved Scottish terriers of President George W. Bush and Mrs. Laura Bush as well as the rest of the world. Information about them became so great that the White House created a website for them with monthly updates and photos. Our Mom loved Barneycam. Sadly they both crossed the Bridge a few years ago. Salute. ~ Indy and Lucy
I don’t think that any of the current crop of candidates is smart enough to have a Scottie.

This was a truly wonderful tribute to Scotties and Presidents who loved them!
I was most interested in Fala after going up to the Roosevelt’s home in Hyde Park, NY several years ago. The home has been virtually kept the way it was while he lived there, and when we were shown FDR’s bedroom (he and his wife maintained separate bedrooms) there on the the foot of his bed was a small, neatly folded quilt that Fala slept on every night and they had Fala’s leash laying across the quilt. When our guide pointed that out to us everyone said, “Awww” while I got chills!
I must confess, it was because of Barney that I became smitten with Scotties. I used to have Basset Hounds and was without a dog for many years when Barney became a sensation. I followed his life in The White House and knew that was the breed for me. My first Scottie rescue, Gus, has gone over The Bridge and now lives in my heart forever.
Thank you for today’s post. I loved it!

I love Scotties and am happy to know that they are all-American too! And….you, (Indy and Lucy’s Mum), say that someone in your house is getting a little Presidential with some signs of a grey beard, eh?

What is Bernie’s position vis a vis dogs? Does he have one? How about Trump? Why doesn’t this question come up during alllllllllll these debates??? I know the Clintons, back in 1992, said they couldn’t get a dog because Bill was allergic to them (though they had a cat)…and then during the height of the Monica Lewinsky scandal, lo and behold, they get Buddy the retriever, and nobody in the Mainsreat Media bothered to ask “hey! Slick Willie? What happened to the allergies?” They managed to get Buddy run over shortly after Bill left office though. Hmmm. Forget the emails, now THAT’S a scandal. – Ainsley McKenna, CEO Angus Fala Worldwide Enterprises

Couldn’t agree more. It should be the foundation of each presidential candidate’s platform.

Bernie’s platform on dogs is, no doubt, much the same as it is on college costs. He probably thinks the government should subsidize most canine costs so that everyone can enjoy having a pet if they so choose. As for Trump, while he doesn’t strike me as the type to have a dog, but if he did, I am sure he would say it was the BEST, the GREATEST and SMARTEST dog there ever was!
During the 2012 election, it was shameful how they made it sound that Romney’s dog, who had traveled in a dog carrier on top of the family car during a trip, wasn’t secured firmly and protected from the elements calling it abusive. It is amazing and sad the level candidates will stoop to.

Interesting. I agree that I wouldn’t think Trump would be much of a dog person. That said, my hoomans were at his hotel in Chicago, and it is very very dog friendly. So I suppose I must give him begrudging props for that.
