The presence of a pet in the White House is a time honored tradition. Several Scotties have had this privilege. In honor of President’s Day (we know our staff is running late), we would like to acknowledge these fans of this loyal breed.
First came Fala, the beloved constant companion of 32nd President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Fala had a bone every morning brought up with the President’s breakfast tray. According to WH staff, Fala was an awful beggar and his food had to be restricted. At night, he slept in a special chair at the foot of the President’s bed. He even had a secretary to answer his mail.
There is rather a controversy concerning Eisenhower’s Scotties. He actually had several Scotties during WWII. Eisenhower is quoted as saying: ” I like the independent attitude of a strutting Scottie.” None though were to live at the White House. However, Skunky the Scottie, a pet of Eisenhower’s grandchildren was an often visitor. Heidi the Weimaraner as well as a parakeet were residents during Ike’s terms of office.
Barney and Miss Beazley were the much loved Scottish terriers of President George W. Bush and Mrs. Laura Bush as well as the rest of the world. Information about them became so great that the White House created a website for them with monthly updates and photos. Our Mom loved Barneycam. Sadly they both crossed the Bridge a few years ago. Salute. ~ Indy and Lucy
