Mom and Dad tried to go to the balloon fiesta when it first opened. They got up at four o’clock, drove an hour, waited in a line of cars three hours only to have the gates closed when it was their turn to enter the park. Did we mention they already had tickets and a parking pass? Needless to say, Mom was hot. However, she is a believer in perseverance so on Friday they returned. This time they got up at three and were in Albuquerque by when the gates opened. Mom said it was a long cold wait till the balloons started flying but worth it. Look for yourself.
There was a laser show at the beginning followed by a Dawn Patrol. A Dawn Patrol consists of a few balloons that go up first to see if conditions are favorable for flying that day.
If it’s a go, a green flag is raised and the ceremonies begin.
Mom said watching the Wells Fargo sponsor balloons carry the USA flag while the Star Spangled Banner was sung very moving.
It was Special Shapes Rodeo day.
Mom loved the pig and you can se a bit of the zebra back there.
Dad liked the pirate ship. See the turtle and penquins?
Here’s a better look.
As you can see, it was a memorable time. Mom said they used the parking pass once and only two of the 10 tickets so she figures it cost about $60 apiece for the balloon experience. She said when she looks at it that way it’s more reasonable…not much more than theater ticket. Hope you enjoyed it too. ~ Indy and Lucy
Mom say there were so many that it was impossible to take pictures of them all.
They are beautiful–definitely worthwhile–how long did they fly and why did mom have to get 10 tickets and only use 2?

Absolutely worthwhile, just sorry about your first attempt. We also have a balloon festival in Statesville, North Carlina, not to far away. Mama’s Dentist flies a Balloon, and we went to see her once, when PawPaw was still alive. I will be sending you a copy of the Mater’s much requested manual, How To Throw A Hand Grenade Sucessfully. Just keep it in your glove compartment. The photos are just magnificent!

We have some that fly by the house occasionally. We don’t need parking or tickets.

We loved all of the balloons. Didn’t they have a Scottie one?

No Scottie but a beagle. Serious oversight if you ask us.

Wow! Those balloons are PAWSOME! Much better than the Macy’s Day Parade! Thank you for the lovely pictures! We had no idea that there were so many balloon shapes now! There SHOULD be a Scottie-shaped balloon–just think hoe cute that would be!
We’re happy you are having such a grand time and sharing it with us!

We discussed this and agree a Scottie one is needed. Now we are getting info on how to pose for one. Mom said 16 yrs ago when she and Dad moved here, a balloon came down just outside our fence in the back yard. It was summer and just getting dark at 9:00 pm. There are lots of electrical wires along the road and a marsh like area behind out house. They could hear the puffs of air and ran out to see what it was. Oh boy was it scary watching it maneuver around all those wires. Mom turned the spot lights on so they could see better. He came down in the middle of the marsh and all the neighbors watching now cheered. That was Moms balloon experience and we weren’t here yet so we can only imagine it in our minds.

Very cool! I showed the pictures to my husband, who really liked the Yoda one. It prompted him to walk around talking in Yoda-speak. lol
