Installment Nine

We arrived later than usual because of the GPS incident; you remember?  Not having eaten on the road, the peeps were starving.  There was a place up the street from our cottage that Mom wanted to try.   It was perfect: reubens, cheeseburgers and sweet potato fries.  In fact, they ate there several times during our stay.  It was a cozy, kick back sort of place.

The Blue Horse Café is a great place for breakfast or lunch and right out our front door.  It’s got a view of the bay inside and outdoor PET FRIENDLY dining.  Menu includes breakfast and lunch sandwiches as well as bakery items and gourmet coffees.  Dad loves the ‘Meatzilla’ and Mom’s fave is the bacon cheddar biscuit.  Jalapeno biscuits were a hit this year too.

The White Gull Inn, also in Fish Creek, is known for its famous cherry stuffed French toast. Mom and Dad had a few breakfasts there as well as lunch with friends.

Fish Creek is listed by Forbes as one of the 15 prettiest towns in America.  This historic B&B contributes to it.

This year a new restaurant, LURE, opened in Sister Bay which is a little over 8 miles up Hwy 42 from our home base in Fish Creek.  Seafood is its specialty and the peeps met Lesley and Bill Connor from Pennsylvania and the Australians, Mark and Wendy, for dinner on its opening night.  Naturally, the oysters made it a must for Mom but Lesley’s whitefish almondine looked so good Mom made a return visit to order it.  She went to a fish boil (very popular in Door) our first year here and got an unfavorable impression of the whitefish.  Now thanks to the culinary expertise at the Lure, she’s a fan.

The owners of the LURE are also responsible for another of the peeps’ favorites, the CHOP.  They ate there several times but don’t have a picture.  However, word is that the carrot cake is the best you can get.  Thumps up if you got them to everything on the menu, Mom said, plus they got to see Elli Lapolla, part owner and  waitress extraordinaire.  Door County is truly about family businesses.  There were a couple of pet friendly places we didn’t get to this year: the DC Deli in Baileys Harbor, Coyote Roadhouse on Kangaroo Lake and the Harbor Grille in Baileys Harbor only once.  There are still many places to try and others to revisit.  Mom is making her list for fall.
