The second coat of paint is on the frame and Mom will probably wax it today. The closest fabric store is 60 miles away though so it will be tomorrow before Dad goes to Tulsa to get the black velvet. Hopefully, they will have it. Meanwhile it is Scottie pin selection time.
This big boy is a fave. Think he’ll go at the top.
This one while not celluloid is one of Mom’s favorites. It will be included.

The frame will hold only celluloid pins. Mom is using the light ones since the background is black.

I think they will look great, especially since they aren’t as black as the velvet will be. Can’t tell what the big pink one is, though. Basket of puppies? Having a Wheatie myself, I really like both represented. 🙂

The wax part is always scary to Mom but you can paint over it with the chalk paint if you don’t like it.

Mama wants to know are you using the light wax or the darker wax? And, she loves this snippet of your collection. Our big faves, from top down, are one and three, but we find them all to be marvelous, as is the arrangement. The pink basket really draws the eye!

Dad always runs errands in Tulsa when he goes up to check on Grand PaPa. We always need something you can’t get here in our fair city of 5,000 (pushing it).

You might consider e-bay! You probably need a small piece of fabric, and I’m sure there are remnants to be had. It’s worth a look and you could have your project done sooner than you thought! Just sayin.

I don’t understand. Your dad is driving all the way to Tulsa for black velvet and you hope there’s some there? Call ahead and if they have some, have it put away for you.

The trip is really to see GrandPapa; it’s not for material alone. We never go to Tulsa without other errands. He needs to pick up fence tops too.

We like it just the way you have it. Mom has some different pins but most of these are new to her eye. She likes your second one that is not celluloid with the colored stones a lot. She also thinks maybe your bright red one may be Bakelite. The smoothness and deep groves are characteristics of Bakelite. Our Dad does errands for Mom too like the fabric store for velvet your Dad is doing. Aren’t Dads the bestest!

Don’t you love that one? It could be enameled. They came together as a collection but were actually purchased because of their whimsy. Mom is so whimsical, you know.

Your Mom is absolutely whimsical….our Mom has told us stories. She thinks your deco smooth white one could be French Bakelite. They do stunning black and white deco Bakelite items. She says she could take her Semichrome polish to door and your Mom could bring any pins she wants tested. If your Mom wants to buy Semichrome, it could be in a hardware or craft store. It is normally used to polish silver. Just a dab on a Q-tip and if it turns orange/pink the item is Bakelite. New China or foreign Bakelite will not turn color so this test is best for American items.

I’ve made molds from Scottie buttons and used the molds to make replicas with clay and other moldable substances. They come out great.

I love all of your Scottie pins, and no, I don’t think you have too many for the frame! I’ll have to go round my Scottie pins up–I don’t have as many as you, but you’ve come up with such a great idea that maybe if I find a small frame, I can put my few pins in it. Maybe I can find a heart-shaped frame for Valentine’s Day and paint it red like you did.
Are you going to hang the frame on the wall or stand it on an easel?
