The dog days of summer are really not about canines at all. It refers to the interval when Sirius, the Dog Star, rises and sets at the same time as the sun. In the Northern hemisphere, that time coincides with the hottest part of the summer, roughly from July 3 to August 11.
As you can see, yesterday in Oklahoma, it was certainly that.
It is a period marked by inactivity, listlessness, and disinterest. The ancient Greeks and Romans got that one right.
We have a couple of more days till the cutoff so stay cool and hydrated. Keep this in mind: ” According to folklore, if the first week of August is unusually warm, the winter will be white and long.” Sounds good to me. ~ Lucy

Oh, my goodness! It is awful!! My Mac has gone out in the yard for a few minutes most days but we haven’t gone for a walk for weeks because the pavement and sidewalks are brutally hot! Unfortunately, even the grass is hot (and dying) because we have NO shade!) Have some little booties that may help that and hope to try them this weekend but even the air is oppressive. We have had a surprisingly pleasant first part of August–temp may hit 90, but the humidity is low and there has been a breeze–very un-Chicago like–normally August is so humid–what does folklore say about a mild August–hope it means a short and mild winter!! Piper enjoys eating snow and romping, but her mom likes it better when there is less snow–makes driving and getting to work so much easier!

Yes–the girls play with it a little–maybe if I made one a little thinner they might like it better-they have short attention spans, except when it comes to nature–spquirrels, blades of grass, leaves blowin–can watch that for hours!

Your temps are brutal. We have been relatively comfortable except for about 2 weeks total this summer. Even our humidity has been down. We have taller trees now so we get some shade. We have a fish pond and have contemplated taking a swim at times but Mom is always out there watching us. Maybe she will turn her back some time……

It was 100 at 10 o’clock last night. Supposed to break by Tues. and be back in the 90s.

OMD!!That sure is hot! Is it usually that HOT in August there, or are you having much hotter weather this year than normal like we are? We even had the hot weather all through the “winter” months here. Now we have humid weather too, due to storms in Baja CA, Mexico, and Monsoons in Arizona, (never thought I’d see Monsoon together in the same sentence as AZ!). At least our summer heat always used to be dry, but it’s been getting humid in the summer gradually more and more every year for the past 5 years or so! What gives? The whole West coast up to Alaska is having a drought and fires, too, which is something only Southern CA use to have during the Fall months before the rains used to start. Now it’s “Fire Season” all year long. For the past 4 years no rain during the rainy season. All of our lakes and ground water are dangerously low. We have water rationing in North Orange County where we live. Tessie doesn’t want to go for a walk in da hot weather. She drops down on a shady piece of grass and won’t move! Momma has to bribe her with a drink and a treat to get her to stand up! She’s only 3 1/2, so dunno why she can’t take it if Riley and momma can do it. We even go for our walks in the cooler mornings and evenings! She’s like her momma–heat sensitive!
Poor li’l Indy and Lucy, dey is hot wit der extra coating! Dey eez so adorable even if dey is droopy dawgees! Dey eez very cute, even hot! Love dem lots!

Mama says ask any old, white menopausal male in the House or Senate….there is no climate change. It would interrupt their dominos games and money laundering. That’s my Mama. Bitter, party of one!.. We get up by 6:30. Mama walks her 2 miles, comes home and we do my mile. Her goal is to be finished by 8am. After that, forget it. We are ready for Fall, but do not want another nasty, very cold Winter
